Oral Cancer Screening at Aultman Dental

Early detection, clearly explained, done right.

Oral Cancer Screenings

What We Use — and Why It Matters

Oral cancer is one of the more treatable cancers when it's caught early. The challenge is that early-stage abnormalities often look like nothing — a faint discoloration, a patch of tissue that's slightly off. That's where the right technology makes a meaningful clinical difference.

At Aultman Dental Leeds, oral cancer screening is a standard part of your comprehensive exam — not an upsell, not an afterthought. We use fluorescence-based imaging alongside a thorough visual and tactile exam to identify tissue changes that wouldn't be visible to the naked eye under normal light. Healthy tissue and abnormal tissue respond differently under fluorescent wavelengths. That difference gives us a clearer picture before anything has progressed far enough to be obvious.

The older approach relied entirely on what a clinician could see and feel during a manual exam — which is still valuable, but limited. Subtle cellular changes at the earliest, most treatable stage often go undetected without enhanced visualization. Adding fluorescence imaging to a manual exam means we're working with more information, not less.

For you as a patient, the experience is straightforward. The screening is painless and non-invasive — no additional instruments, no discomfort. It adds very little time to your visit. What it adds to your care is a more complete picture of what's actually going on in the soft tissue of your mouth.

If something warrants a closer look, we'll tell you directly — what we saw, what it may indicate, and what the appropriate next step is. That might be a follow-up appointment to monitor the area, or a referral to a specialist. Either way, you leave knowing exactly where things stand.

"Great place. Great staff. I fell and chipped my teeth on vacation. I called first thing monday morning and Lori got me scheduled the same day. Dr. Kilgore was quick to fix the problem and now it’s like you’d never know my teeth were broken. I’m very thankful for their help and everything they did for me!"
